Many children breeze through dental care with no sedation at all. For those who need a little extra help, we offer two well-established options: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation. Both are safe, effective, and monitored throughout the appointment.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small nose mask. It takes effect in minutes, wears off in minutes, and leaves no lasting effects. Your child remains awake, can talk with us, and can eat normally afterward.
Nitrous is excellent for: longer cleanings, fillings, and any visit where a child is anxious but otherwise able to cooperate.
Oral conscious sedation
For more apprehensive children or longer procedures, we may recommend oral conscious sedation. Your child takes a measured medication by mouth before the appointment that brings them into a relaxed, drowsy state. They remain responsive but much calmer than they would otherwise be.
Vital signs are continuously monitored throughout the visit. Dr. Jon holds an Oral Conscious Sedation for Minors permit and PALS certification.
How we decide which is right
Anxiety level, age, the procedures planned, and your child's medical history all factor in. We discuss the options with you in advance, walk through how the appointment will go, and answer every question before anything is administered.
